The School Playground Study
This study is using a combination of observational data, questionnaire data and children’s drawings to explore the racial ecology of relations in the playground of an integrated high school in Gauteng province, South Africa. We are using these data to explore the construction and navigation of racial boundaries in informal social spaces.
One part of the study involved coding patterns of occupation in the playground. Another required school children to draw patterns of occupation as they recollected them (see the example below).
